BIO
Artist Start 2021
As a visual artist and storyteller, I construct scenic images and theatrical moments that explore the possibilities of figuration and narration. By intertwining contemporary aesthetics with the historical art forms of painting and tapestry my work aims at telling timeless stories about the human as a social being. Four years ago, I fully occupied myself with creating humorous figurative paintings and tapestries. I took this affirmative decision in favour of figurative painting to communicate stories in a more direct way and to reach inclusiveness and approachability for a diverse audience.
The aesthetics of the large-scale paintings and tapestry is inspired by the art historical painterly movement of New Objectivity (german: Neue Sachlichkeit) as well as by contemporary graphic design and the aesthetics of ancient tapestry series. The painterly artistic strategy of a compositionally flat and stilted perspective offers the viewer an undistracted direct glimpse into the private life of different family constellations. With almost no implementations of depth, the foregrounded characters gain the viewer's immediate attention. By playing with exaggerated perspectives and disregarding anatomical conditions the emotions of the troubled characters are intensified.
The creation of anti-chronological scenes has been inspired by photography and, in particular, Thierry De Duve’s media theory that famously regards the photograph as a “frozen gestalt”. Being thrown into a scene without any explanations resembles the experience of witnessing only one scene in a theatre play or randomly reading one chapter in a book. However, to also reach the viewer on a private emotional level I invent carefully thought-through fictional characters in relation to each other, who’s stories the audience can follow. Capturing intimate moments of conflict and basic emotions such as longing, jealousy, fear, grief or boredom aims at offering the viewer space to fill their own stories in.
